About BOTOX

To help turn back the hands of time and to prevent lines and wrinkles from forming on the upper section of the face, Caroline J. Plamondon, M.D. Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery in Dartmouth, MA is proud to offer BOTOX to local men and women. This nonsurgical procedure provides gorgeous results and is extremely popular among both men and women. BOTOX can make a big enhancement to dynamic lines and wrinkles, which are created by making expressions with the muscles contracting on the upper face. The lines disappear as the face relaxes, but dynamic wrinkles can still exist. BOTOX is a filtered strain of botulinum toxin (type A) that temporarily blocks the movements of the facial muscles to correct these unsightly lines. It is most commonly administered by plastic surgeon Dr. Caroline Plamondon between the brows, on the Crow's feet, and along the forehead.

Ideal Candidates

BOTOX is ideal for individuals who want to smooth the appearance of dynamic lines on their face nonsurgically. BOTOX is also used as a preventive treatment even if you are younger — keep in mind how often you tend to make facial expressions. It is a great nonsurgical approach if you have forehead lines or noticeable furrows between the brows. It's also a solution for lines that form around the eyes. If you have deeper lines, an injectable filler may be recommended. Furthermore, if you are older with severe wrinkles, you may opt for a facelift. This offers a more dramatic result and it is more long-term. Caroline J. Plamondon, M.D. Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery offers facelifts, brow lifts, and eyelid surgeries as great options.

Procedure Technique

BOTOX injections are performed as an outpatient procedure at Caroline J. Plamondon, M.D. Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. If it is your first time to visit us in Dartmouth, MA for BOTOX, we often perform the injection during the same appointment as your consultation with Dr. Plamondon. You will be asked to make different facial expressions using the upper face, such as squinting, frowning, etc., which will allow us to plan where the injections will be placed. The skin will be cleansed and BOTOX will be injected through a fine needle, followed by a cold compress to help lessen swelling, bruising, and discomfort. You can request a numbing cream to make the procedure more comfortable, but it generally is not necessary. BOTOX injections typically take about 10 – 15 minutes and you can return to your normal activities after a short rest.

What to Expect

After the injection, you can resume your daily activities, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least 24 hours. You will be asked to sleep upright for the first night and to not touch your face, which may accidentally spread the treatment to other areas. The treated areas of the face may be slightly bruised, swollen, or red for a few days, but you will not experience any serious or long-lasting side effects. In most cases, it usually takes about 5 – 7 days before the full effects of BOTOX are visible. The results typically last 3 – 4 months. You should speak to your injector about how often to schedule touch-up appointments at Caroline J. Plamondon, M.D. Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery to maintain your results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does BOTOX cost?
Your cost for a BOTOX treatment will depend on how much product is used. This will vary based on your needs and goals. During your consultation, Dr. Plamondon will create your personal treatment plan before she can estimate your costs. BOTOX can produce wonderful results when performed by a skilled plastic surgeon, like Dr. Plamondon, but it can also be unsafe if done by someone without training, which is why it's better to avoid places offering cheap or knock-off injections. To save money, ask about the Brilliant Distinctions Rewards Program so you can earn points for BOTOX treatments and other Allergan products, like Juvéderm.

How long will my results last?
The results from BOTOX can last up to four months. Most patients schedule an appointment every season to refresh their results, but you may want to come back sooner. If you are getting BOTOX while you are younger as a preventive treatment, you may be able to schedule appointments further apart. After listening to your goals and creating your treatment plan, Dr. Plamondon will be better able to estimate when you should schedule your next appointment.

What's the difference between wrinkle relaxers and fillers?
Wrinkle relaxers (like BOTOX) and wrinkle fillers (like Juvéderm and Restylane) are both popular cosmetic treatments that decrease wrinkles and smooth fine lines. BOTOX relaxes overused facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, like frown lines (between the eyebrows), Crow's feet (in the outer corner's of the eyes), forehead wrinkles, and smile lines. Wrinkle fillers add volume under the skin to correct hollow areas and decrease the appearance of wrinkles on the surface. Depending on your goals, Dr. Plamondon may recommend BOTOX, injectable fillers, or a combination of both for a "liquid facelift."

What's the difference between BOTOX and Xeomin?
BOTOX and Xeomin are injectable wrinkle treatments that use botulinum toxin (type A). Both relax facial muscles to correct dynamic wrinkles, but each formula is designed to suit specific areas and needs. There are subtle differences between them, including the recommended dosage, treatment spread, and length of results. Dr. Plamondon will choose the best brand or brands to match with your needs and goals.

Is BOTOX safe?
When administered properly, BOTOX rarely causes any complications. With that said, it is still very important to find someone who has experience in handling this medication, like Dr. Plamondon. Too much of the product can cause an undesirable outcome. A skilled plastic surgeon will use just enough BOTOX to effectively freeze the facial muscles that cause wrinkles while leaving nearby muscles unaffected. As one of the most popular cosmetic treatments on the market today, BOTOX is safe and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In addition to cosmetic uses, BOTOX is also used to treat medical conditions, such as facial spasms, excessive sweating, uncontrollable blinking, and migraines.
